TEXAS READING CLUB 2008

The purpose of the Texas Reading Club is to promote reading, stimulate curiosity, and attract children to the library. The emphasis is on cheering children to read for fun and helping them build retain valuable reading skills during their summer vacations. The Texas Reading Club is a self-paced reading program. Our mission is to encourage children to make reading a part of their summer activities. Parents also need to assure children that the reward for their participating in the program is the experience of reading. The logs are to help children keep track of the titles and pages they read. The certificate will remind each child of summer reading adventures long after the program ends. The prize bags will start the children on their way to making a reading effort. By making the changes outlined below, we hope to bring back to the children a sense of “reading is its own reward” and do away with the “competition for the sake of competition” part of the program. As a bonus, we have booked special shows to encourage children to make reading a summertime quest.

Rules for Parents

This year we are discontinuing the competition for trophies. There will be no weekly programs as before and there will be no weekly turn in of the reading logs.

2.      Children  can sign up on June 4, 2008 or after to receive a reading log and gift bag before the first program on June 11.  Parents are responsible for making sure that their child reads books that are age and reading level appropriate. Record the title of the book and number of pages in the book.

Children eligible to register for the Summer Reading Program are PreK-5th Grade only. Parents of Pre-K children can complete the reading log by reading the books to the child and recording pages read.

4.       We will have four shows for the children this summer---June 11, June 25, July 9, and July 23. Check the flyers and website for the times of each show. Parents need to remain on the premises while the children are watching the program.

Before each show, the children should read 300 pages, and turn their logs in to be eligible for a prize drawing that will be held after each show.

There will be no timed reading. The children should record only the titles they have read and number of pages. They are required to read 300 pages by the day of each show to be in the drawing.

After the last show in July, the children will receive their reading certificate and those children who receive a reading certificate will be treated to a Hot Dog Party.

8.       Children do not have to attend the programs, as long as they continue to read and complete their logs.

Unless otherwise permitted, there are to be no food or drinks in the meeting room or outside in the main library during the program.
